“Carolina on my Mind”

Franklin, North Carolina, July 1 – August 9, 2020

When planning our summer escape from Panama City Beach, we sought cooler temperatures. We chose Franklin, North Carolina because of the location, and because of the elevation of 2200 feet. The weather reminded me of South Florida because we had showers for an hour every afternoon, although the temperatures were much cooler. Mostly the weather was beautiful. We took advantage of some warm days and relaxed at the pool in the park. Ziva enjoyed our site by relaxing on the “catio”

Franklin had a paved green way that ran approximately 7 miles beside the Little Tennessee River. We walked the greenway almost every morning. Because we had very little internet at the park and erratic telephone access, we sat at the greenway pavilion and connected to the world.

Franklin is located near numerous hiking trails, the Appalachian Trail and tons of waterfalls. We hiked part of the Bartram Trail a couple of times. It was a tough 2 mile hike up about 1000 feet of elevation and then 2 miles back down. We hiked a couple of trails at Standing Indian Park. The Appalachian Trial runs through Standing Indian Park and we were able to hike part of the AT. We also hiked to Pickens Nose (Yes – that is really the name) and walked up to Wayah Bald. Both of these points are accessed by single lane dirt roads with lots of switch backs on the edge of a mountain a/k/a “a near death experience.” The views of both were wonderful, but I am not sure I would make the drive again.

Our stay in Franklin allowed us time to organize and get used to living life on the road. We enjoyed the RV park. The park was clean and well maintained. We met new friends that we hope to see along the road again.
