Bayfield Wisconsin, August 5 – August 10, 2021
Munising Michigan, August 10 – August 12, 2021
We arrived in Bayfield on August 5th and were pleased to discover that our campground was within a mile of a brewery. So what did we do? – of course – we went to the brewery. Adventure Club Brewing was in the same building with a bike shop and was pretty cool. Unfortunately, their beer was not available, but they were serving Ursa Minor Brewery beer from Duluth, one of our favorites. Bayfield was cute and we enjoyed walking around downtown.
Our main reason for stopping in Bayfield was to take a boat ride to see the Apostle Islands. The Apostle Islands consist of 22 separate islands in Lake Superior off of the northwest corner of Wisconsin. This area has a lot of history as a route for travel for the Ojibwe and other tribes, the voyageurs used the islands for fur trade, and in modern times as a locations for lighthouses to guide boats. The boat trip was just so so, but we did get to see many of the islands. We also hiked along the shore and were able to see some sea caves.
Bayfield was also home to a “Fruit Loop”, so we toured through orchards, farms, wineries and cideries. Steve picked absolutely delicious blue berries. They were yummy. Our favorite stop was the Wineries on Betzold Road. I tried cider for the first time, but the main draw was live music. We spent a couple of afternoons enjoying the music and sipping cider. Did I mention how much work retirement can be sometimes?
We made a short stop in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at Munising. Our whirlwind stop consisted of By George Brewing Company, trying a Pasty (pronounced past – ee), and a boat trip to view the Painted Rocks.
Pictured Rocks contain colorful cliffs that contain limestone colored by dripping water that contain iron, manganese, limonite, and copper. The cliffs appear to have streaks of blue, green, orange, red, purple and gold. We did not have much sun on the day of our trip, so the pictures do not do the rocks justice.
I absolutely loved the Pasty. It is a delicacy for Yoopers (people from the upper peninsula of Michigan) It is basically a meat pie and totally wonderful. Yum Yum!
Our next stop is Cheboygan Michigan.

Great reading these Monica, hope to some day cross paths again 😊
Steve and I really enjoyed By George, I am only sorry that we did not take a group photo with you guys – then you would have ended up in the post! Also thanks for the tip on the store close to the brewery. I really hope we meet again one day!
