Mystic, Connecticut May 24 – May 27, 2022
Newport, Rhode Island May 27 – May 30, 2022
Mystic was a significant Connecticut seaport and at one time built lots of ships. Today it is a tourist destination. The town is small but quaint. The Mystic River Bascule Bridge crosses the river in the center of town and is pretty cool looking. We walked around town and went into the shops – no we did not have any Mystic Pizza.
The highlight of Mystic was the Mystic Seaport Museum. The museum contains exhibit halls, a replica of a 19th century seaport town (with over 60 historic buildings), a working shipyard, and several wooden sailing ships and boats. I love dioramas and this one was incredible of the city of Mystic from the 19th century. We met some new friends in Mystic (Bob and Tracy) and I am pretty sure we will see them on the road again.
I really liked the figurehead exhibit.
Here are some ships and boats.
And the diorama.
After Mystic we headed to Newport. I loved the town of Newport. Lining the cobblestone streets were historic brick buildings containing tons of shops and restaurants. Newport was the largest of the seaport towns we have seen so far, and it reminded me of Portland, Maine. The oldest synagogue in the United States is in Newport. We walked the historic cliff walk which had great views of the ocean and saw some of the Mansions built during the Gilded Age. We did not tour any – I think Steve was gilded aged out after Hyde Park.
We found a cool bar right on the Easton Bay called Rejects.
Our next stop is Boston.

Would love to visit Mystic. I will probably partake in some Mystic Pizza!
