Baileys Harbor/Door County – June 7 – July 7, 2021
Our month in Door County was jammed packed with all types of activities. We rode our bikes, took the ferry to Washington Island, took a boat tour of Green Bay, visited all of the different villages, went to the local parks, visited the farmers markets, ate out at several restaurants and of course went to breweries. We followed some recommendations of activities that are a “must” when in Door County.
Apparently attending a fish boil is a “thing”. I read numerous articles that recommended going to a fish boil. So – of course – We had to try a fish boil. After research, we found the perfect place called Pelletiers in Fish Creek. A fish boil is exactly how it sounds. The cook/chef boils water and then adds fish, (in this case white fish – bones and all) potatoes, and corn. Wa Lah – you have dinner after copious amounts of butter are added. If you visit Door County, do not add a fish boil to your list of things to do.
Another recommended activity was the Door County Maritime Museum. We traveled down to the big city (the city with stoplights) of Sturgeon Bay (population 9877) to go to the museum. I was impressed by the museum. The museum had a short film, an elevator ride up to the lighthouse tower, and tons of exhibits. The view from the tower was awesome.
While in Sturgeon Bay, we drove south to go to Renard’s Cheese Shop. This is a cheese store which also ended up on our “must do” list from numerous articles that I read. The shop was fine, but we found much better cheese at other locations in Wisconsin. That will teach me to follow all of the tourist recommendations.
Lots of time we spent just doing our own thing. We spent a great deal of time in Sister Bay (population 876). The closest grocery store was located in Sister Bay. The Piggly Wiggly was the only chain store of any kind north of Sturgeon Bay. We shopped for produce at the Farmers Market held on Saturdays.
We went by a local restaurant that is famous for a grass roof where goats graze during the day. This place is called Al Johnsons and is a Swedish restaurant. We did not eat at the restaurant (because it was packed with children) but we did have a beer in the beer garden next to the restaurant.
We celebrated Steve’s birthday and had a wonderful dinner at Waterfront Restaurant in Sister Bay – and you guessed it – the restaurant is on the waterfront. The food was absolutely delicious and we saw a great sunset over Green Bay (the bay not the city).
I know you were thinking that Steve and I stopped visiting the local watering holes. Well you were wrong. We visited Bridge UP Brewery south of Fish Creek and saw Hunter Gatherer (yes the same guy we saw at Door County Brewery) play at The Cherry Hut. The brewery was from Sturgeon Bay and just opened at this location. We had a great time, and the beer was good.
We also went over to One Barrel Brewing in Egg Harbor
We visited Stone’s Throw Winery near Baileys Harbor. These wines are made with grapes that are imported from California and made in Door County.
We stayed in Door County for a month, but I could have stayed longer. If the opportunity arises, I would definitely go back.
