“Lookin Out My Back Door”

Baileys Harbor/Door County – June 7 – July 7, 2021

As I mentioned previously, there was so much to do and see in Door County, that one post was just not enough, OK two posts was not enough – so here is more on Door County.

In the previous post, I wrote about riding our bikes to Fish Creek (population 997). We made that ride several times during our stay, and also rode our bikes through Peninsula State Park. This park is on Green Bay (the bay not the city) side of the peninsula. The park was beautiful and had a very well maintained dirt bike trail. We visited the Lighthouse in the park, had a picnic lunch, and viewed Green Bay from the observation deck.

We took a boat trip out of Sister Bay and saw the park from the Water.

One day rode we our bikes to Ephraim (population 288). This town was pretty neat because it sits on a rounded harbor. We had lunch at a cute little restaurant overlooking the water. This town was “dry” until about three years ago, so the village does not have as many restaurants as the other villages in the county.

Washington Island is an island located on the northern tip of Door County and reachable only by ferry. We took our bikes on the ferry and toured the island. We visited School House Beach, which is one of only five beaches in the world where the stones on the beach are perfectly smooth. I never sat on a stone beach before, I am so used to the white sandy beaches of Panama City, this was kind of weird. We also visited the Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm and Shop. The lavender was not in full bloom, but beautiful.

We also visited Cave Point County Park and White Dunes State Park, which were next to each other. The shoreline of each park was dotted with high cliffs that contained numerous caves. You could see the caves from the outcroppings of rock or you could tour the caves by kayak. We walked along the shore and hiked in park. We did not kayak because for one, we were told that most of the lake rescues are for people who do not know how to kayak in such rough water and because I am not crazy!

Next up we have an overnight stop in Durand and then on to Duluth.
