Chicago/Sycamore Illinois May 19 – May 24, 2021
On our way north to the Great Lakes, we made a short stop near Chicago. We planned to visit friends and go to the Art Institute of Chicago (one of the places with the most Van Gogh paintings in the US).
We arrived on the 19th and headed to downtown Chicago the next day. The RV resort was located in Sycamore which is about 60 miles west of Chicago. so we took the train. We toured the art institute (which was huge), saw the Monet Exhibit and of course all the Van Gogh paintings. I loved the museum.
After touring the museum, we wandered around downtown Chicago, back and forth over the river. Later that day we met Peter and Michelle Braverman (Peter is a friend of Steve’s from Hollywood, Florida). We had dinner at Sienna Tavern. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of the four of us. We had a great time and the food was delicious. We had so much fun that we almost missed the last train back. We sat down with only two minutes to spare. It was a long day, but we had a great time.
We also visited with Jeff and Joanne (again – no picture) who we met on a Rhine River Boat Tour in 2019. Jeff and Joanne were excellent tour guides. One day they showed us around Geneva (a small town outside Chicago). We walked through the shops, had lunch at Barrel and Rye and ice cream at the All Chocolate Kitchen (featured on the Food Network). The next day we spent several hours at the Morton Arboretum. We enjoyed catching up with Jeff and Joanne and hope to see them again on our travels.
The campground was near the Great Western Trail between Sycamore and St. Charles. This was a pretty nice rails to trails which runs about 17 miles. The trail ran parallel to the road in places and through farmland. I never realized how flat and how much farm land was in Illinois, but is was beautiful.
Our next stop is Hartland, Wisconsin just outside Milwaukee.
