“Moonlight in Vermont”

Quechee, Vermont September 7 – September 11, 2022

We visited Quechee before on our long ago trip through New England. This time, we visited some old and some new sites. One of previous visited places was the Covered Bridge and falls right next to the Simon Pierce glass Store. Everything was how I remembered. A new highlight was the Whistle Pig Tasting Room which was conveniently located right next to Simon Pierce. It was great.

We also made a quick stop at the Quechee Gorge.

We went to the Calvin Coolidge Historic Site (this was new) located in Plymouth, Vermont. The entire town was part of the site. It was not a very big town. We saw the home where Coolidge was born which was behind the general store that his father owned. We also saw the home (owned by his father) where he was sworn in as president. The museum was small and not that informative. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give this site a 4.

When we visited previously, we visited Saint-Gaudens National Historic Park. The park is located in New Hampshire and very close to Quechee, Vermont. This park preserves the home, gardens, and studios of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) , one of America’s foremost sculptors. We loved the museum the first time, and were not disappointed on our second visit.

Woodstock (not the one in NY) was really close to Quechee and we visited several times. We visited the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park which is located in Woodstock. The park preserves the Marsh-Billings House, as well as the site where Frederick Billings established a managed forest. The museum had a really informative movie about the history of the park, George Perkins Marsh, Frederick Billings, Mary French Rockefeller, and Laurence Rockefeller, and all of their efforts on conservation. We hiked on part of the carriage trails and hiked some more treacherous trails. During one hike, we were treated to an excellent view of Woodstock.

The home at the park was lived in by Marsh, Billings and the Rockefellers.

We wandered through the shops in Woodstock and stopped into a really cool wine and cocktail bar called Sante Woodstock. The cocktails were almost works of art. We met new friends at the bar (they were drinking fancy cocktails) and we had a great time.
