Lexington Kentucky (Georgetown), April 11 – April 22, 2021
A trip to bourbon country would not be complete without drinking — well — bourbon, and we did a lot of bourbon drinking. We had a guided tasting at Four Roses Distillery, which was one of our favorites. We also went to Wild Turkey, and had drinks at Woodford Reserve. All three are located near Frankford, Kentucky.
Near Lexington we toured and tasted bourbon at several craft distilleries. Bourbon 30 is located in Georgetown and is very small and dingy. The bourbon was fine. We had a guided tasting at Blue Grass Distillery in Lexington. This distillery was pretty good and we walked away with a bottle of bourbon. Our favorite craft distillery was Barrel House Distillery. It is located in the Distillery District of Lexington. It is on the site of the old James E. Pepper Distillery which shut down in 1958 and was abandoned for 50 years. The site is now home to a new and improved James E. Pepper Distillery, Barrel House Distillery, shops and restaurants. Barrel House is a small distillery with only two employees. One of whom was the distiller who took us on the tour. Of course we bought a bottle.
The only brewery we went to while in Lexington was West Sixth Brewing. This brewery is located – at – wait for it – 6th Street in Lexington. Our first stop here was to have a place to rest while we were waiting on the tire repair. The second stop was just for fun. The beer was good. Although apparently, the first time we went I picked a beer that Steve did not like. He ordered the same beer the second time we went and that time I did not like the beer. I made Steve drink the beer and I drank the delicious one.
To sum up we bought a bottle of Four Roses, Woodford Reserve, Blue Grass, and Barrel House. We did not buy any beer. So that is three bourbons, one rye, no scotch and no beer. We had a great time in Lexington.
Our next stop is St. Louis Missouri.
