“Ramble On”

Flatrock, North Carolina – September 15 – October 13

We arrived in Flatrock on September 15. Flatrock is near Hendersonville and about 20 miles south of Asheville. We originally planned to stay at a park in Silva, North Carolina, but after looking at the park in July, we decided that we needed to find another park. We found Lakewood RV Resort based upon a recommendation from a friend we met in Franklin and we were glad we made the change.

Our first sightseeing excursion was to Jump Off Rock. It was located in the town of Laurel Park. after driving a curvy mountain road up to the 3100 foot summit, we found a small park with a stone overlook, benches and several short hiking trails.

We also visited Chimney Rock. The centerpiece of Chimney Rock State Park was the 535 million year old monolith rock which is named, aptly enough, “Chimney Rock”. At the peak we experienced a 75 mile panoramic view of Hickory Nut Gorge. The park had numerous hiking trails and one of North Carolina’s highest waterfalls (featured in the movie “The Last of the Mohicans”).

Dupont State Recreational Forest was an outdoor lover’s dream with many waterfalls and 86 miles of trails on 10,000 acres of protected land. The area was located between Brevard and Hendersonville. We walked a 7 mile round trip path and viewed four different waterfalls (High, Hooker, Triple and Bridal Vail). Triple Falls was filmed in “Hunger Games” in the scene where Katnis tracks Peeta to the base of the falls. Bridal Vail Falls (also in Hunger Games) was filmed in the movie where Katnis jumps into a pool after being burned. All of the falls were beautiful and the hike was not strenuous.

Pearson’s Falls, near Saluda, is accessed by a 1/4 mile paved trail. The falls were great. unfortunately, I could not find a photo of this.

We enjoyed our time in Flatrock. Most days we walked a paved path that the city developed on an old golf course. We would certainly visit this city and the park again.
