Suttons Bay, Michigan August 19 – September 19, 2021
Suttons Bay is a small coastal town on Lake Michigan and located on a peninsula above Traverse City on the Western side of Michigan. Suttons Bay is also conveniently located near several bike trails, parks and about 30 wineries.
The Leelanau (pronounced lee la naw) Trail begins in Suttons Bay and ends in Traverse City. The trail is beautiful and runs by apple orchards, cherry groves, vineyards, corn fields and fields of sunflowers. We rode our bikes on the trail several times a week while in Suttons Bay. I liked the fact that the trail had a number almost like a highway and very unique signs. The signs were hysterical.
We also took our bikes to the other side of the peninsula and rode down the Sleeping Bear Heritage trail which runs through the towns of Empire and Glen Arbor, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We stopped on our ride to walk the dunes. The dunes were tough walking up and I had sand in my shoes for days afterwards. The top had great views of the surrounding area.
While we were in Bayfield, Wisconsin, we met a couple who traveled in their camper for 5 months per year. They were traveling on a similar route as we were through the upper peninsula of Michigan. After talking we discovered that we were scheduled to be in Suttons Bay at the same time. So – we met up. They were a lot of fun and since we were in the wine capital of Michigan we went to wineries. We actually took a bike wine tour of 3 wineries (Ciccone Vineyard and Winery, Mawby Vineyards and Winery, and Blackstone Winery) and one cidery (Suttons Bay Ciders). It was awesome and I did not even wreck my bike after drinking wine and cider. Then later we met back at the campground and cooked out. It was great to talk with other people about what they loved about traveling in an RV. I am hopeful that we will meet Don and Laurie again soon.
We finished our tour of the Great Lakes and now we are headed south. More on that next!
