“Two More Bottles of Wine”

Flatrock, North Carolina – September 15 – October 13, 2020

We entertained a few people while we were in Flatrock. Drew (a friend of Steve’s from U of F) who lives in Asheville, joined us for a few hours one day. Mike and Karen were in the area and dropped by to watch a Gator Game. They also joined us on a visit to Marked Tree Winery.

Out of the blue, Steve saw someone he knew from Panama City pulling into the park. It is a very small world. We went to a winery with John and his wife and had a great time.

Steve and I were surprised to find that in addition to all of the breweries in the area(many were closed because of COVID or offering pick up only), Hendersonville was home to 4 wineries. We went to Burnt Shirt Vineyards, Point Lookout Vineyards, St Paul Mountain Vineyards and Marked Tree Vineyards. Point Lookout had beautiful views. Burnt Shirt had a wonderful facility, but no view. Marked Tree turned out to be our favorite and we visited several times. We loved the cabernet franc and the view was fabulous.

Because we could not visit the area without visiting a brewery, we rode over to Brevard and visited Oskar Blues. I thought the beer was pretty good. At this point, I have now acquired a taste for beer that I never had before. I am an IPA drinker. We also visited a small brewery in Brevard called Ecusta Brewing Company. The beer was fine and outdoor seating was just a couple of picnic tables. Sierra Nevada, which has a huge brewery near Hendersonville, was closed. Oh well – next time!
